I never realized how important Speech Therapy was until I had a child who could not speak clearly. She was hearing impaired and when it came time for her to learn how to make words they came out strange and mixed up. We used to say she had a language all her own. Some said she would never learn to speak clearly but Speech Therapy was initiated and that child has now graduated from college. To listen to her is a gift; she not only speaks clearly but she articulates beautifully. You would never know she ever had a problem.

Now I have a grandson who is struggling with words. He has no problem hearing but he has troubles putting it all together. When he came to Speech Therapy he had no words, now he does and it’s all because of Speech Therapy.

So often we minimize the importance of Speech Therapy thinking it’s not that important, but it is. The sounds that our children and grandchildren are able to make will form the foundation of their lives.

So, if you need a Speech Therapist be sure you choose the right one. Over the years I have discovered three things that were critical to my child’s success. First the Speech Therapist needs to have great credentials in Speech Therapy and they need to be keeping current on the latest education. Second, the Speech Therapist needs to really like what they are doing. The Speech Therapist must be passionate about their craft and enjoy the child they are dealing with. Third and most important my child must be responsive to them. If these factors are not present I suggest you change.

I have found Blast Off to be an excellent place filled with wonderful therapists who really care about the kids; one of the very best is LuAnn Lower, M.A., CCC-SLP. My grandson loves going there and his word list is really growing. Blast-Off is one of the finest Speech Therapy offices I have ever had the honor to attend.
